How to Monitor Websites that don’t have RSS Feeds

Monitor Webpages for Changes

If you’re a Firefox user then you can try update scanner . It’s an extension that lets you monitor webpages for changes. You have an option to choose how often the website should be checked for changes, and whether it should ignore the minor ones, such as the changes to numbers.

Update Scanner : Monitor Website Changes

When the page changes it shows a notification alert. If you monitor multiple webpages then you can get a quick overview of pages using the arrow button located at the right bottom corner of the screen. Web pages that have been updated will be shown in bold with an arrow next to them.

Update Scanner

If you don’t use Firefox then you can try ChangeNotes or ChangeDetection. Both of these websites can monitor requested webpages and will send you an email when something changes.

Monitor Error Pages

Mr. Uptime is a bit different but serves a similar purpose. It’s another Firefox extension that comes in handy when you come across a website that’s experiencing down time. With Mr.Uptime you are able to add such a website to the watchlist and get notified as soon as the website is back online. The following image sums up the whole idea pretty well:

Pingdom - Get Notified

There is also an option to specify the interval at which the page should be monitored. Check out Mr. Uptime video screencast here.

How to Make Your Cell Phone Battery Last Longer

  1. Turn the phone off. This is probably the most effective and simplest way of conserving your battery’s power. If you don't plan on answering the phone while you're sleeping or after business hours, just turn it off.
  2. Stop searching for a signal. When you are in an area with poor or no signal, your phone will constantly look for a better connection, and will use up all your power doing so. This is easily understood if you have ever forgotten to turn off your phone on a flight.
  3. Switch off the vibrate function on your phone, and use just the ring tone instead. The vibrate function uses up a lot of battery power. Keep the ring tone volume as low as possible.
  4. Turn off your phone's back light. The back light is what makes the phone easier to read in bright light or outside. However, the light also uses battery power. If you can get by without it, your battery will last longer.
  5. Avoid using unnecessary features. If you know it will be a while before your phone’s next charge, don’t use the camera or connect to the Internet. Flash photography can drain your battery especially quickly. If your phone has bluetooth capability, disable it when not in use.
  6. Keep calls short. This is obvious, but how many times have you heard someone on their mobile phone say, "I think my battery’s dying," and then continue their conversation for several minutes? Sometimes, the dying battery is just an excuse to get off the phone (and a good one, at that), but if you really need to conserve the battery, limit your talk time.
  7. Turn off Bluetooth. BT will drain your battery very quickly, and having it on can cause you problems near virus-infected smartphones.
  8. Same goes for WIFI and GPS if your phone has these features built in. Keep them off, save more power.
  9. Use GSM - Using your phone in 3G / Dual Mode will drain the battery quicker than if you just use GSM mode - have a look at your phones spec and you'll see it will quote two different battery life times - normally 50% more for pure GSM use.

Google Web Accelerator

Google Web Accelerator is a web accelerator produced by Google. It uses client software installed on the user's computer, as well as data caching on Google's servers, to speed up page load times by means of data compression, prefetching of content, and sharing cached data between users.

The beta, released on May 4, 2005, works with Mozilla Firefox 1.0+ and Internet Explorer 5.5+ on Windows 2000 SP3+, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Vista machines.

Google Web Accelerator sends requests for web pages, except for secure web pages (HTTPS), to Google, which logs these requests. Some web pages may embed personal information in these page requests.Google receives and temporarily caches cookie data that your computer sends with webpage requests in order to improve performance. In order to speed up delivery of content, Google Web Accelerator may retrieve webpage content that you did not request, and store it in your Google Web Accelerator cache.

Porsche Introduces P'9521

Crafted out of sturdy aluminium and mineral glass, the Porsche P'9521 weighs 137g and measuring a somewhat chunky 47mm wide, 90mm tall and 18mm deep.

Inside, this phone packs enough features to scare off any other car-inspired phones -- including a fingerprint reader, which doubles up as touch-sensitive scroll interface for navigating through the menu or your pictures.

On the back, the Porsche P'9521 sports a 3.2-megapixel camera with auto-focus and dual LED photo lights. You can spin the P'9521's screen 180 degrees as you would with a tablet laptop and use the larger main screen as a viewfinder.

Another noteworthy feature is the built-in accelerometer, which lets the phone know which way you're holding it up and changes pictures from portrait to landscape mode automatically.

In the box you get a headphone adaptor to listen to music or make hands-free calls. There's also a 2GB microSD card.

All in all, we're fairly impressed with it, but we're astonished at the price. For the handset alone you'll have to fork out £800. The Porsche P'9521 will be available in November.

gOS

gOS is a series of linux distributions. This is an alternative OS with google apps and other web 2.0 apps for modern user. This first version of gOS was based on Ubuntu 7.10 and Enlightment Window Manager.

Good OS released a beta of the second version of gOS on January 1 2008, called gOS-live-2.0.0-beta1 and nicknamed "Rocket". However this version did not seem to be a valid replacement for rev 1.0.1 as it was missing some essential functions, such as hardware and system administration tools, and the easy to use application installer "Add/Remove".It also missed the capability to access CDs and hard-disk partitions other than its own.

On April 7, 2008 Good OS (gOS) and Everex introduced the limited edition MyMiniPC running gOS Space 2.9, a special version of gOS Linux made for MySpace users, featuring brand new MySpace Apps just weeks after the MySpace API launch. The MyMiniPC targeted MySpace users with its glossy white case, 3D desktop, and a media center dock stacked with MySpace and Web 2.0 folders for News, Photos, Videos, Music, TV and Movies, and more. All in a system one and half inches tall and weighing two pounds.
